Abstract
Description
This research presents a systematic review aimed at analyzing current scientific evidence regarding the effects of structured Cognitive Stimulation (CS) on preserving mental capacities in the elderly, and its consequent impact on reducing primary caregiver burden. Twenty-five high-methodological quality studies published between 2021 and 2026 were selected. Findings confirm the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions, especially highlighting multicomponent programs simultaneously combining aerobic physical exercise with cognitive demands, producing an undeniable synergistic effect that enhances neuroplasticity. Clinically, CS successfully significantly slows the temporal progression of progressive cognitive decline, preserving executive functions, working memory, and verbal fluency.
The most relevant clinical benefit for care is the maintenance of functional autonomy in basic and instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL and IADL), delaying absolute dependency and preventing premature institutionalization. Regarding indirect impact, the bidirectional nature of benefits is categorically confirmed: the patient's clinical improvement directly affects primary caregiver health. By the aged adult retaining greater orientation and functionality, demand for constant supervision and appearance of severe behavioral symptoms decrease drastically.
This results in significantly lower scores on the Zarit Burden Interview, showing reduced levels of chronic stress, anxiety, and depression in the family environment. Additionally, day care centers' role as vital family "respite" support is highlighted. CS is concluded to be an irreplaceable neuroprotective, prophylactic, and therapeutic tool in the modern care model
