| dc.description | Falls among older adults represent one of the leading public health concerns due to their negative impact on functionality, independence, and quality of life. A significant proportion of these events occur within the home environment, where several modifiable environmental risk factors are present. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific evidence regarding home environment adaptation as a strategy for fall prevention in older adults. A narrative literature review was conducted using scientific publications indexed in PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs, Redalyc, and Google Scholar between 2020 and 2025. Studies were selected according to previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 32 articles included in the final analysis. Findings identified inadequate lighting, slippery floors, lack of support bars, loose rugs, and architectural barriers as the most common environmental risk factors. In addition, environmental modification interventions, including the installation of handrails, lighting improvements, non-slip surfaces, and furniture reorganization, were shown to significantly reduce fall risk. The reviewed evidence indicates that these interventions can decrease fall incidence by 19% to 40%, particularly when combined with other preventive measures. It is concluded that home environment adaptation is an effective, safe, and cost-effective intervention that should be systematically incorporated into comprehensive older adult care programs. | |
