Abstract
Description
Investigating the complex connections among oral health, the difficult act of swallowing, and the widespread risk of malnutrition in older adults constituted the central theme of this research. Employing a research methodology that was documentary, descriptive, and qualitative, this study brought together findings from thirty scholarly articles, carefully chosen from respected databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and SciELO. The synthesis of gathered data strongly suggests that the absence of teeth, diminished chewing strength, a dry mouth condition, oral discomfort, and ill-fitting dentures all contribute to limiting the range of edible items and make the creation of a food bolus more challenging. In tandem, dysphagia and presbyphagia precipitate apprehension during meals, cultivating a tendency toward eating foods that are bland and lack diversity. Thus, it is deduced that a thorough care model ought to feature detailed oral examinations, prompt identification of swallowing issues, intentional adjustments to food textures, careful oversight of nutritional intake, precise regulation of fluid intake, and consistent assistance during the entire eating process, all designed to forestall negative outcomes and enhance general health.
