| dc.description | Insomnia and anxiety affect well-being and quality of life, increasing interest in complementary interventions such as aromatherapy. Objective: To analyze recent scientific evidence on the use of essential oils in adults with insomnia, impaired sleep quality, or mild to moderate anxiety symptoms. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted through a structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, SciELO, and LILACS, with Google Scholar used as a supplementary source. Articles published between January 2021 and June 2026 were considered, including clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Results: The evidence showed a favorable trend toward improved subjective sleep quality and reduced anxiety symptoms, particularly situational anxiety. Lavandula angustifolia had the most consistent supporting evidence, while chamomile and Melissa officinalis showed promising results in specific populations. However, heterogeneity in concentrations, routes of administration, intervention duration, and measurement instruments prevented the establishment of standardized protocols. Conclusions: Aromatherapy may be considered a complementary tool for promoting relaxation and improving perceived sleep quality. However, it should not replace medical or psychological care or be presented as a curative treatment for insomnia or anxiety disorders. | |
