Abstract
Description
Grapefruit essential oil is obtained from the peel of the fruit of Citrus paradisi (its scientific name), primarily through cold pressing. This oil is characterized by its fresh, citrusy, sweet, slightly bitter, and energizing aroma, and by its high content of compounds such as limonene, myrcene, and other monoterpenes, with limonene being the major component. This essential oil has been the subject of numerous studies for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potentially anxiolytic properties. These characteristics make grapefruit essential oil widely used in cosmetic products and alternative therapies. This study aims to analyze the bibliographic evidence on the evaluation of grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi) in topical application and its emotional and aesthetic benefits within the scientific community. This narrative review article synthesizes the literature published between 2016 and 2026 using various databases, including articles, books, reviews, research, and experimental studies. Based on the above, the results regarding the benefits of topical grapefruit essential oil in the treatment of skin conditions such as folliculitis, adiposity, and hyperpigmentation are reported. Furthermore, its antioxidant properties help protect the skin against oxidative damage, promoting a healthier appearance. This demonstrates its potential for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. The volatile compounds in these oils enter through the nose and stimulate the receptors in the olfactory bulb, which are directly connected to the limbic system of the brain, helping to reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, thus achieving positive effects on emotional well-being.
