Abstract
Description
Low back pain is one of the leading causes of functional limitation among older adults, negatively affecting mobility, independence, and quality of life. In this context, naturopathy offers complementary therapeutic approaches that may contribute to the management of this condition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an essential oil blend applied through therapeutic massage on the intensity of low back pain in older adults treated at the GAIA Holistic Center in Guayaquil, Ecuador. A quantitative, quasi-experimental, longitudinal, and prospective study was conducted involving 18 older adults diagnosed with musculoskeletal low back pain. The intervention consisted of the topical application of a blend of wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), and lemon (Citrus limon) essential oils diluted in fractionated coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), administered through therapeutic massage over a four-week period, with three 45-minute sessions per week. Pain intensity was assessed before and after treatment using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The results demonstrated a reduction in pain intensity and an increase in the number of participants reporting mild pain at the end of the intervention. It is concluded that the application of this essential oil blend through therapeutic massage may represent a complementary approach for the management of low back pain and may contribute to improving the well-being of older adults.
