Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is frequently associated with psychological disorders such as anxiety, which can negatively affect patients' quality of life, treatment adherence, and overall well-being. Anxiety is particularly common during cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy, and follow-up care, as patients often experience uncertainty, fear of disease progression, and concerns regarding prognosis and survival. In recent years, complementary therapies have gained increasing attention as supportive interventions in oncology care. Among them, aromatherapy has emerged as a non-invasive and low-cost therapeutic approach that utilizes essential oils derived from aromatic plants to promote relaxation and emotional well-being. The therapeutic effects of aromatherapy are primarily associated with stimulation of the olfactory system and the limbic system, which are involved in emotional regulation and stress responses. The aim of this study was to review the available scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of aromatherapy as a complementary therapy for the management of anxiety in oncology patients. A narrative literature review was conducted using scientific articles published in indexed databases, including PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, and Google Scholar. Studies published within the last five years that evaluated the use of aromatherapy in cancer patients experiencing anxiety were included. The reviewed evidence suggests that aromatherapy, particularly through the inhalation of essential oils such as lavender, bergamot, and chamomile, may contribute to reducing anxiety levels, promoting relaxation, and improving emotional well-being in oncology patients. Although the findings are generally positive, methodological differences among studies indicate the need for further high-quality research to strengthen the existing evidence. In conclusion, aromatherapy appears to be a safe and promising complementary intervention for anxiety management in oncology care and may contribute to improving the quality of life of patients undergoing cancer treatment.
